We are a design studio located in Auroville meant for people to discover themselves through creativity and integral design. Our field of work ranges from social development, design and manufacturing of garments using rich palette of traditional Indian textiles, design consultancy and education.
Upasana is also a place where business, creativity, fashion, Indian culture, design, social responsibility and spiritual progress all come together for a creative integration. It is a place where people are the central focus and all the projects, products and resources are to help people to grow and develop into their fullest capacity.
Upasana delved into the realm of Socially Responsible Design after the 2004Tsunami, when they took on the initiative of providing livelihoods to the fisherwomen from the Tsunami affected villages around the coast of Auroville. The Product of the project – the Tsunamika has now become a worldwide ambassador of peace and is supported by UNESCO. (www.tsunamika.org)

Bestseller Foundation (Funding Agency)
Bestseller is a family-owned clothing company founded in Ringkøbing, Denmark, in 1975 by Troels Holch Povlsen. Today, Bestseller employs more than 39,000 people – designing, developing, selling and marketing Bestseller’s brands. Bestseller main forte is women's fashion and since a few years they have been making collections for both children and men.
Bestseller’s principles are built on fairness and opportunities. Cultural differences are an advantage, which will promote quality, extraordinary results and good values.
Their sense of social responsibility is something that comes from within - from the spirit of their company that says: if we are able to help other people, then we have to help. It is about having that extra surplus - of both energy and resources - to help other people.
Bestseller puts great effort and resources into helping people in need and they are therefore involved in various development projects around the world. They came across an international news report in 2006 about the weavers’ community in Varanasi that is suffering due to competition from cheap substitues. They decided to place an order for 13000 silk scarves which would be a New Year’s gift for its employees. Upasana Design studio executed the project and once that order was completed, they decided to continue working with the artisans’ community to develop and encourage this craft.
